For SP’s Go Green Day all staff and students showed their
support by getting to campus by BMW (bus, MRT, walk). The
only BMW allowed past the locked gates was evHUB’s
all-electric converted BMW 5 series sedan which was a big
hit with students and professors alike. Parked right at the
entrance to the SP Convention Center, our all-electric BMW
and Renault van were prominently featured next to other EV
projects including an electric scooter and golf cart powered
by solar panels. Car-Free Day was just one of the many
activities to mark the start of SP’s very own Go Green
movement. SP principal, Mr Tan Hang Cheong started the ball
rolling by planting a tree at the Plaza next to Dover MRT.
“The Earth is yours, caring for the environment doesn’t need
to be something big. You can start with small things like
switching the lights off when you are not using it,” said Mr
Tan in his speech at the start of the event.
The message to go green also came in the form of a fashion
statement when the audience was treated to the Green Fashion
Show. Student models strutted and sashayed up and down the
stage, captivating everyone with their eco-fashion outfits.
Nearby, booths selling eco-friendly items like clothes,
footwear and eco-education kits were set up for the Green
Bazaar.
There were also small but meaningful gestures like green
apples to thank those who took public transport and students
and staff who gamely donned green outfits for the day.
The climax of the event was the Green Band Competition which
saw teams from the different academic schools performing
using instruments made from recycled materials. Dustbins,
ladders and even a skateboard were just some of the many
items used in their improvisations. The band from the School
of Electrical and Electronic Engineering eventually came out
tops with their eco-friendly take on “We Will Rock You”.
The event was brought to a meaningful conclusion as students
and staff sang “Heal the World” together, followed by a
symbolic lights-off ceremony.
